The website name comes from the fact that I am a crazy musician who loves the sounds created by synthesizers. I use the letter Q as a tribute to my favorite synthesizer

... the WALDORF Q.

What really makes it QRAZY is that I own four  Q synthesizer keyboards:

... a ruby red 100 voice Q+ with 16 discrete analog filters, a classic blue 32 voice Q, a nextel blue 16 voice Q with wooden end cheeks and I was very lucky to find a rare yellow 16 voice Q with wooden end cheeks.

Other Waldorf gear in my studio:

... a Blofeld 25 voice desktop synthesizer, an original yellow Micro Q 25 voice synthesizer rack, a classic blue Micro Q 25 voice synthesizer rack, a classic blue Micro Q Omega synthesizer rack with up to 75  voices, an original yellow Q Rack 16 voice synthesizer rack w/step sequencer, a Micro Wave 8 voice synthesizer rack w/v2.0 software and a Waldorf ROM sound card by Rob Papen, a Micro Wave II 10 voice synthesizer rack, a Micro Wave XT 10 voice synthesizer rack and a Micro Wave XTk 30 voice synthesizer keyboard, a Rack Attack 25 voice drum synthesizer rack, a Pulse and a Pulse+ analog mono synthesizer racks and finally... an X-Pole Dual Filter, a miniWORKS EQ-27 MIDI controllable equalizer, two miniWORKS 4-pole 24db analog filters, a Gekko MIDI Arpeggiator and two Q-256 RAM cards.

Other non-Waldorf gear in my studio:

... a Moog Minimoog Voyager R M E analog synthesizer rack, an Access Virus Rack XL synthesizer rack, a Manikin Electronic Memotron w/Berlin School, Studio, Vintage and Vintage 2 Collections plus M-Tron software by GForce, an Alesis Micron synthesizer keyboard, a Roland M-VS1 Vintage Synth, a Roland XV-2020 synth module, a DSI Poly Evolver synthesizer rack, an E-MU Vintage Pro synthesizer rack, a Korg Triton Rack with a Korg EXB-SCSI & Sony CDR-1 external CD-ROM drive, an Akai MPK-49 MIDI keyboard Controller w/USB, a Roland PK5 MIDI pedal controller, an Alesis NanoBass synth module, a StudioLogic CMK-49 MIDI keyboard controller, an Alien Head XLPC Theremin and a Manikin Electronic Schrittmacher MIDI Step Sequencer. An Electrix Warp Factory w/vocoder, an Eventide Eclipse and a Lexicon MPX-550 round out my effects section. For recording I use a Fostex FD-8 digital multitrack recorder/mixer, a Mackie 1202-VLZ mixer, a Mackie 1402-VLZ PRO mixer, two Mackie 1202-VLZ PRO mixers, an Alesis Multimix-6FX mixer, a Sony A-6 DAT recorder, a Sony MDS-JE520 mini-disc recorder and a Sony MDS-E10 rack mountable mini-disc recorder, a Samson Q5 headphone amplifier and two Roland KC-500 mixer amplifiers.

Studio B:

... a rare Waldorf Q-16 original yellow synthesizer with wooden end cheeks and a Waldorf Micro Q Keyboard are the main synthesizers in my alternative studio. I purchased another Manikin Electronic Schrittmacher MIDI step sequencer from Analogue Haven so I could have one in each studio. Other synths include an Access Virus b, a Clavia/Nord Micro Modular synth module, an E-MU Proteus 2000 synthesizer rack, a Korg 01/WFD synthesizer keyboard w/sequencer, a Moog Etherware Theremin, a Novation KS-4 synthesizer keyboard, a Sherman Filter Bank v1, a Lexicon MX-200 Dual Reverb / Effects Processor, two Alesis Multimix-6FX mixers in the Drum Room, a Behringer Eurorack MX-802A mixer, a Mackie 1202-VLZ PRO mixer, a Sony MDS-JE480 mini-disc recorder, and a Edcor AP-10 headphone amplifier.

You can see these synthesizers and everything else listed here on my Studio Pics page.

My name is Steve Siers, but most people know me as Steve Siers AKA Quad "The Qrazy Synth Man" and I have been playing synthesizers for more than thirty years. As you can tell by doing the math that I must be close to fifty years old. The truth is I am closer to 60... but don't let the fact that I am an old musician fool you... just add today's technology to the mix and the results will go way beyond your imagination. How young or old you are means nothing ... as long as you allow your mind to create ... synthesizers will remain ageless!!!

WHAT'S NEW:

SPORTS:

The PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES are National League East Champions for the second straight year after holding on and beating the Washington Nationals 4-3 in a nail biter as Brad Lidge saves his 41st game. He was a perfect 40 out of 40 without a blown save and the Phillies were 77 wins and no losses leading after eight innings, but this one would not be easy as there were bases loaded, one out and a run already in. Zimmerman with home-run power, hit a ground ball up the middle as shortstop Jimmy Rollins dove and caught the ball and flipped it to Chase Utley who threw it to Ryan Howard for the game ending double play.

The PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES beat the MILWAUKEE BREWERS 3 games to 1 in the "best of five" NLDS (National League Division Series) and now they are playing the LOS ANGELES DODGERS in the "best of seven" NLCS (National League Championship Series) to see which team will play in THE WORLD SERIES.

The PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES beat the LOS ANGELES DODGERS 4 games to 1 in the "best of seven" NLCS (National League Championship Series) for their first WORLD SERIES appearance in 15 years.

The PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES beat the TAMPA BAY RAYS 4 games to 1 in the "best of seven" WORLD SERIES for their second WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP in team history. The Phillies won their first WORLD SERIES title 28 years ago (1980).

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2008 WORLD CHAMPION PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES!

EXPLODING MONSTERS with George Martindell on drums, percussion and sound effects and Frank Sonsini on lead guitar and synthesizer ... both former members of the progressive space rock band Science Friction (with me playing synthesizers and a fretless Rickenbacker bass) released their debut CD Exploding Monsters with original compostions of moody, modern soundscapes full of dark and ethereal sounds... combining a blend of progressive instrumental fusion that touches the ambient, rock and space metal genres. You can also hear Science Friction Sound Design music by these talented, innovative and unique sound designers on DR. SHROUD ... an online flash animated serial also available on DVD.

I will keep you up to date with any news regarding the release of their second album, which promises to be as good or even better than their debut CD www.scifrimusic.com and www.drshroud.com

In the meantime, Frank and George teamed up with Robusto Records and released a new CD under their Science Friction name called "Symphony of the Night - An Epic Halloween Journey" just in time for Halloween. Symphony of the Night is a bubbling cauldron of musical mayhem and spine-chilling sounds that will frighten and delight all who dare to embark on this Epic Halloween Journey.

MANIKIN ELECTRONIC SCHRITTMACHER MIDI STEP SEQUENCER

www.manikin-electronic.com

This is a powerful sequencer made in Germany with endless rotary knobs that allows the user to make changes while the pattern is running. It was designed by Mario Schönwälder with some help from Klaus Schulze.

There is a Limited Edition Black Schrittmacher autographed by Klaus Schulze at Analogue Haven, but this collector's item came too late for me because I purchased another Schrittmacher from Analogue Haven a couple of months before the LE release ... so I could have a Schrittmacher in each studio.

MANIKIN ELECTRONIC MEMOTRON

The MEMOTRON has every sound that the legendary MELLOTRON has but does not require the time consuming task of cleaning and demagnetizing the tape heads ... which must be done every 30 hours of playing time if you wanted to keep the MELLOTRON sounding like it should.

Sounds can be loaded by CD-ROM and/or stored on a compact flash memory card.

I would like to raise my glass and salute MANIKIN ELECTRONIC for producing this extraordinary keyboard. Everyone there especially Thorsten Feuerherdt, took the time to keep me informed and explain any delays that occurred during the past year.

On January 4, 2007 Thorsten sent me a OSv1.0d upgrade for the Schrittmacher and the next day he sent me a Memotron manual .pdf file ... so I could get a head start before the Memotron arrived.

On January 16, 2007 the Memotron arrived and it is absolutely a dream come true to finally have the keyboard sound that I have been waiting for years to add to my synthesizer arsenal. The 12 sounds on The Vintage Collection CD-ROM are excellent and can be enhanced with the Attack & Release function and 15 different effect-algorithms including the famous Leslie speaker rotary effect that makes not only the organ sounds better, it gives every sound the ability to have a swirling note bending responce. There is an optional Studio Collection CD-ROM with 12 more excellent sounds including some awesome choir sounds and MkII (Hammond) church organ. My favorite sounds are Flute, Cello, MkII "Crimson" 3 Violins, Moog Taurus / MKII Violins + Brass, Genesis 8 Choir and Male Choir ... but all 24 sounds are very good to excellent.

Thank you again Manikin Electronic, Waldorf and Chuck & Shawn at Analogue Haven in Pomona, California.

This only reinforces my belief that the German synthesizer companies (Access, Manikin Electronic and Waldorf) are far superior to any other synthesizer manufacturer making synthesizers today!

www.analoguehaven.com -- where the serious musicians buy their gear!

Chuck and former Analogue Haven partner Antonio have joined forces and opened a new store in Pomona, California called Noisebug. I'd like to wish them both the best of luck and I will continue shopping 3000 miles away ... but now I have two places to choose from. Visit www.noisebug.net and www.analoguehaven.com to see where The Qrazy Synth Man buys his gear!

Musicians that made me what I am today:

This is a picture of the great German synthesizer composer, Klaus Schulze taken in 1980 from a concert in Linz, Austria at a steel factory that was televised on German TV. I am very fortunate to have a copy of that show I recorded from a VHS tape given to me by a magazine editor in Germany onto a DVD+R. ...along with Ash Ra Tempel and Neuronium jamming plus two bonus videos (Manuel Gottshing).
